The challenge

What was going wrong

The founders had a clear idea for small business lending but a long wish list. Investors and partners wanted to see a working product, and the team had limited budget and no in-house engineers.

Lending apps handle identity checks and sensitive financial data. Cutting corners on security or compliance was not an option, so the first version had to be small but still safe and reliable.

Our approach

How we worked it out

  1. 1

    Decide what matters most

We ran workshops with the founders to separate must-have features from nice-to-have ones. The goal was the smallest product that proves the idea.

  2. 2

    Design the key journey

We mapped one core path, from sign-up to an approved application, and tested clickable screens with real small business owners.

  3. 3

    Build for safety first

We built the mobile app and back end together, with identity checks, encrypted data and role-based access in place from the first sprint.

  4. 4

    Release and learn

We released to a small group of borrowers, tracked where they dropped off, and planned the next sprints around what we saw.

What we built

The solution

  • Borrower mobile app

Applicants sign up, verify identity and submit a loan request from their phone.

  • Admin review console

The lending team reviews applications and records decisions in one place.

  • Identity check integration

Know-your-customer checks run through a trusted third-party provider.

  • Usage analytics

Simple dashboards show where users stall so the team can fix those steps.

What changed

The results

  • Working product to show

The team could demonstrate a live app to partners and early customers.

  • Decisions based on real use

Feature plans now follow what borrowers actually do, not guesses.

  • A base that can grow

Security and structure were built in early, so features can be added without a rewrite.

Technology

What it was built with

  • React Native Build iPhone and Android apps with shared code.
  • Node.js JavaScript runtime for fast web services and APIs.
  • TypeScript Typed JavaScript that catches mistakes before release.
  • PostgreSQL Dependable database for complex business data.
  • AWS Amazon cloud hosting and services.
  • GitHub Actions Automates testing and releases on every code change.
