The challenge

What was going wrong

The manufacturer ran several plants, each with its own systems for production, stock and sales. Every month analysts exported files, cleaned them by hand and pasted them into slides. Two people could build the same report and get different answers.

Leadership could not compare plants fairly because the same word meant different things in different places. A late order, a unit of output or a margin was measured differently. Any new dashboard would only spread the confusion unless the definitions were settled first.

Our approach

How we worked it out

  1. 1

    Agree on the key measures

We held workshops with finance, operations and sales to write down plain definitions for the measures that matter. Disagreements were settled once and recorded.

  2. 2

    Design the warehouse

We modeled a central data warehouse around the business, with products, plants, customers and orders as the main building blocks.

  3. 3

    Build the data pipelines

We built automated pipelines that pull from each plant system, check the data and load it on a schedule. Failed loads raise an alert instead of a silent gap.

  4. 4

    Deliver dashboards and train

We built dashboards with the people who would use them daily, then trained analysts to extend them so the team can run the platform on its own.

What we built

The solution

  • Central data warehouse

Plant, sales and finance data sit in one place with shared definitions.

  • Automated data pipelines

Scheduled jobs collect, clean and check data from every plant system.

  • Management dashboards

Leaders see output, stock and margin by plant, product and customer.

  • Data quality checks

Rules flag missing or odd values before they reach a report.

What changed

The results

  • Monthly reporting no longer hand built

Analysts stopped copying and cleaning files and spent their time on questions instead.

  • Fair comparison between plants

Shared definitions let leaders compare plants on the same basis for the first time.

  • Fewer disputes over the figures

Meetings moved from debating whose number is right to deciding what to do next.

Technology

What it was built with

  • Snowflake Cloud data warehouse that scales storage and queries separately.
  • Apache Airflow Schedules and monitors data and model pipelines.
  • Python Readable language for business logic, data and automation.
  • Microsoft SQL Server Microsoft relational database common in finance and ERP systems.
  • Metabase Self-serve dashboards for exploring business data.

Field crews act on faults before they spread

Live equipment data that predicts faults

Problem
Sensor data was stored but rarely read in time.
What we did
Built a streaming pipeline and early-warning models.
What changed
Crews get alerts while a fault is still small.

Crews hear about faults before customers do

Remote sensors warn crews before equipment fails

Problem
Remote equipment was checked by driving out on a fixed schedule.
What we did
Fitted sensors and built a live monitoring dashboard.
What changed
Crews are sent where readings show a real problem.
