The challenge

What was going wrong

A shipment passed through several carriers, warehouses and customs agents. Each kept its own records, and they often disagreed about when goods changed hands and in what condition. Settling a damage claim could take a long time.

No single company was trusted to hold the master record. Partners also would not give up control of their own systems. Any fix had to work alongside what each partner already used and be hard to alter after the fact.

Our approach

How we worked it out

  1. 1

    Agree on the facts

We ran workshops with the partners to agree what counts as a handoff, what must be recorded and who may confirm it. This became the rulebook.

  2. 2

    Choose the right network

We compared options and picked a permissioned network where only approved partners take part. This keeps data private while the record stays shared.

  3. 3

    Write and test contracts

We wrote smart contracts that record each handoff and its confirmation. They were tested with unusual cases and reviewed by a second engineer before use.

  4. 4

    Connect partner systems

We built simple connectors so partners can send events from the tools they already run. A pilot with a few partners came before a wider launch.

What we built

The solution

  • Shared handoff ledger

A permissioned record of each handoff that no single partner can quietly change.

  • Smart contracts for confirmation

Rules that require both sides to confirm a handoff before it counts.

  • Partner connectors

Light integrations so partners keep using their existing systems.

  • Shipment history view

A simple screen showing every handoff and who confirmed it.

What changed

The results

  • One version of the truth

Partners look at the same record instead of comparing their own spreadsheets.

  • Faster claim discussions

Damage and delay claims start from agreed facts rather than competing accounts.

  • Partners kept their own tools

No partner had to replace its systems to take part in the shared record.

Technology

What it was built with

  • Solidity The main language for writing smart contracts on Ethereum networks.
  • Ethereum Widely used smart contract network for tokens, finance and apps.
  • Hardhat Builds, tests and deploys smart contracts before they go live.
  • OpenZeppelin Reviewed contract libraries that reduce risk in token and access code.
  • Node.js JavaScript runtime for fast web services and APIs.
